What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restorative option that covers a damaged or compromised tooth. The crown is helpful in protecting the underlying tooth while improving functionality. Crowns are made of incredibly durable materials that can last for years. Most crowns can last for anywhere from one to two decades depending on the amount of wear they receive.
Why are Dental Crowns needed?
A dental crown may be needed if you have a tooth that has broken, cracked or has fractured. If a tooth has a lot of decay in it or a large filling, we may recommend that a crown be placed. Oftentimes, a patient who has just undergone a root canal will need to have a crown placed. The crown that is placed is made to feel and fit comfortably at all times.
Who is a candidate for Dental Crowns?
We can examine your teeth to determine if a crown is necessary. Crowns are one of the most common restorations that are placed around the world. If you need a crown, we recommend having one placed as soon as possible. This prevents any further damage to the tooth that could result in the need for more invasive treatment.
What happens during the procedure for Dental Crowns?
We will administer a local anesthetic to the area to numb the mouth. The tooth is filed down to create a small seat or abutment for the new crown. Impressions are carefully taken to be used to craft a brand new crown for that tooth. You will come in for a second visit to have the crown placed. The crown is adjusted to ensure that the bite is correct and that it’s comfortable. Your brand new crown can be cleaned and taken care of as you would any other tooth within the mouth. You can expect it to last for a few years before needing to be replaced.
