What is a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?
A scaling and root planing, which is sometimes known as a deeper cleaning, is helpful for when you have gum disease. As gum disease begins and is able to progress, the gums separate from the teeth. This causes small pockets to form, allowing dirt, food and plaque to get deep below the gum’s surface. The scaling and root planing is a cleaning performed by a hygienist that works to clean this pocketing.
Why would a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing be needed?
You may need a scaling and root planing if you have gum disease. The disease can and will eventually get worse without proper treatment. Over time, the gums may begin to recede and you may even start to deal with tooth loss. Before it’s able to get this bad, we suggest a deeper cleaning done in our office.
Who is a candidate for a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?
With the help of an exam to check your gums, we’ll determine if you need a scaling and root planing. The pocketing around each tooth is measured, and if these pockets are deeper than about 3mm, we may suggest treatment. Treatment is essential for stopping the progression of the disease and preventing tooth loss. The cleaning is normally done in two consecutive appointments.
What happens during a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?
We will administer a local anesthetic to the mouth in order to numb one side of the face. The hygienist will then use special tools to clear away plaque, debris and tartar from both above the gum line as well as deep below it. The roots of the teeth are carefully smoothed so that no bacteria is able to adhere to these areas. This allows the gums to heal naturally and recede back towards the teeth. You will then come in for the other side of the mouth to be treated in the same manner.
